Free Tour old walls of Girona

2h Plaça Sant Feliu, beside The River Cafe.

So much history!
Girona is one of the most beautiful and least-known cities in Spain, yet it has so much to tell. With more than 2,000 years of history, the city still preserves sections of its Roman, Carolingian, and medieval walls — and you can actually walk along them to see the city from above the rooftops! We also keep the original route of the Roman Via Augusta, a Jewish Quarter considered one of the best preserved in medieval Europe, a bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel…

First, we will enter the old town to visit the Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, a former Benedictine abbey and a true gem of Catalan Romanesque architecture. We will cross the Galligants River to discover the Arab Baths, the gateway to the Archaeological Walk, where we will see beautiful terraced gardens stretching along the Carolingian wall.

We will continue walking and come across the Gironella Tower, from where we will access the upper part of the city walls. Once there, we will begin walking along them and, in addition to learning about Girona’s Roman, Carolingian, and medieval history, we will enjoy privileged views of the city.

Next, we will descend from the walls and head toward the German Barracks and the Gardens of La Francesa, where the Charlemagne Tower stands — the only remaining tower from the Romanesque cathedral of Girona.

The free tour will also take us past the Convent of Sant Domènec and the Les Àligues building, which was the first location of the University of Girona. Finally, we will walk down the Pujada de Sant Domènec to reach Plaça de l’Oli and the Rambla de la Llibertat, the heart of the old town, where the tour will come to an end.
